Hey. I haven’t been very good with updating through my placement as one I haven’t been progressing much with the mini due to lack of time and two, I have been travelling around the country to some nice places with my girlfriend.
Anyway, My placement has ended at Bosch. Was an amazing experience and I learnt so much. I now feel ready to tackle my third year. However I have 'Mini' matters to attend to.
Now it may seem like a big step, but I have had a roll cage fitted. I am using the cage to add rigidity to the shell as they flex a fair amount. With the extra power going through the subframes I want to be able to reduce the amount of flex in aid of improved handling.
Unfortunately the fabricator who was carrying out the work didn’t do what we discussed, and doesn’t want to put it right. Moral of the story is to check and double check plans before committing to something. However not everyone abides by those rules.
I spent a long very hot week cutting the roll cage out and then I contacted a company called Custom cages and proceeded to order from them with my custom tube lengths to accommodate for my seat being way back.
However. When it arrived it was way too short. (Fuming!) So I quickly called them up and informed them off the problem. Apparently the production leader had only added 24mm not 240mm as stated.
So the salesman nicely sent me another one with correct lengths. So essentially I have two roll cages. :) In reflection I should have approached a larger company first as they are more geared up to customer satisfaction than smaller Fab men.
Anyway, I eagerly welded the very well fitted cage into the car. Every pipe was wonderfully cut and it welded together very nicely. I used a pulsed welding method as I researched that this is best for reducing heat effect on the CDS steel which could potentially alter its properties. However there are varying opinions on this matter.
